About the pigeons food it was written in different books. What I can say is that according to my experience, you cannot give flier pigeon what he hasn,t natively inherited,by food only. But by various and balanced food you can preserve and maintain what cherrycoloured pigeons need to have: silky feathers with metal brightness strong bones vitality and reproduction capacity etc. Food is very important during the moulting or when they have babies but this doesn’t mean that the rest of the time the pigeons can be neglected. It is advisable that green vegetables under various forms either fresh or soup should be given to the pigeons and also vitamins , minerals, sand from shells( Black Sea seaside is perfect as compared to other seasides poor in sand) . All the food should be given with moderation at it is well known that any excess causes more trouble than benefits.
The two factors are essential for a healthy life are: the sun (as much as possible) and the humidity ( as less as possible).
If you can keep control on humidity with the help of a hygroscopic clock shavings layer and a heating source , the sun cannot be controlled. So the daily ratio of food differs according to the season. Of course, there are other factors: moulting , reproduction, flight…
As far as the diseases are concerned I am for their prevention and not for the treatment. When you have even only one bird that is ill, you are obliged to treat it but in order that you shouldn’t arrive there, it is simpler to prevent it by a balanced and various diet and a microclimate without humidity.
Vitamines :
Are necessary and you have to take into account that there are two kinds
Liposoluble
Hidrosoluble
Minerals:
Macroelements and microelements
Macroelements: are calcium , phosphore, magnesium, potassium, sulphur. All of them contributes to a healthy bones.
Microelements: are copper, manganese, zinc….iron.
We can get them by green vegetables and by minerals bought from the specialized shops.
Minerals: I myself give them minerals in a big cage , but I put a box of minerals in each nest so that each one of them takes what ever it needs.
Salt: it is indispensable to the pigeons; if they are given salt at certain intervals they will take much salt and implicitly much more water resulting loose excrements. But if the pigeons will have salt all the time , they will get used to find the salt in the same place anytime , and they will take each time as much as they need without excess.
There are of course different types of seeds some of them they like more but they make more damage than well if they are given in big quantities such as the rape the hemp or the sunflower. The rape is good for the moulting due to the content of sulphur helping the new feathers to appear. There are other seeds that are less liked but they assure beautiful feathers, for example barley and oat.
The seeds for the pigeons are:
- cereals plants( wheat, maize)
- leguminous plants( pea, small pea lentil) ,
- oleaginous plants (rape , hemp, sunflower)
Various books say how and how much is used from each one of them. White , yellow and red mie is also good for the pigeons as well as white and red, which the pigeons adore.
Rice is also worth being used.
I noticed the pigeons prefer the seeds light in colour. Therefore is good to give the dark ones first and them the light ones. It,s preferable that the pigeon should eat the first seed it sees and not to wait the seeds it prefers.Of course, when you don’t have time and you cannot feed them by hand , then it is better that the food is more than not to be at all, especially when they have nestlings. The nestlings should be used to feed them selves and to gradually teach them that . I put in the cage a little box with food out of which the adults will peck heartily and the nestlings will notice.

Thus when having 23 days they will feed themselves without begging food from their parents all the time. This way the parents work becomes easier especially for the males , they being able to concentrate only upon the new laying. The art of feeding consits in assuring the pigeon all their daily necessities , but without getting them fatter. A too fat female pigeon could not have laid eggs and maybe this is not a thing that you want. The reproducers should be in perfect health to quarranty that their nestlings will be strong enough to break the egg. Too dry envinronment will make a very hard egg-shell that the less strong nestling will not succeed in breaking. To avoid this the reproducers need to have at least one bath a week with bath salt that will also give the humidity that is necessary to the eggs , but also to keep the parasites away from them. The female need to have the necessary ,,material,,(mineral food, Ca, seeds, vitamins) to put in the egg everything is needed. So that the nestling should be full of vitality. It is recommendable not to breed weak nestlings that when growing up will be ill or strengthless. Food should be shown its importance in order that we could have continuity by strong successful nestlings. That means our correct and profound information to succeed in doing what we have proposed to ourselves : healthy and beautiful nestlings.Nothing is difficult when everything is made out of passion and the satisfaction will be greater.

Although there are still more to be said I’ll stop here avoiding saying things that are already known.Loving our pigeons we will try to get informed as much as possible to assure them a far better life.
