Normally one cannot know a pigeon breed, anyone of them, by studying the standard only. One cannot know it by a few photos on the internet. To get to know it one should see it day by day, to like it, and to start feeling it. I am triying here to help the ones that want to make a first step in getting to know the cherrycoloured flier.
There are two different colours in the catalogue:
The Romanian cherry white coloured flier
The Romanian cherry coloured flier
At first sight the differences are:
The cherry coloured framed tail of the Romanian cherry coloured flier.
In counterparty the white tail of the Romanian cherry coloured flier.
The size a little bit bigger concerning the Romanian cherry coloured as compared to the white one.
Of course the differences are many , so let’s take them step by step. The cherry coloured flier is a ornamental and pleasure sport bird that can be admired in exhibitions as well as in the courtyards of the unfortunately less and less passionate breeders. It is a breed bred for its beauty. About the flight of the cherry coloured pigeons I have written something in the chapter General Considerations. They have a butterfly like flight very beautiful due mainly to the white fanlike tail as well as to the contrast between white and cherry. It is a good breed bird that has no need of nurses. It breeds easily the two nestlings in a laying. I saw cases of breeding three babies one of them being put there by the breeder on purpose. Normally this isn,t a good choice. Romanian cherry white coloured pigeon should have at a first sight a few striking characteristics:
The colour
Its drawing
The form, the size, the height position
The form of its head
The colour: dark cherry, the rotten cherrycolour the same on the hole body.
The Drawing:
- A white collar around the head like a scarf as symmetrical as possible.
- the white tail starting from the backhead.
- the lack of the white drawers.
-
the clear presence of the frames in the wing.
- the frames are small mirrors white in colour near the top of the feathers in the wing and in the tail( for the Romanian cherry coloured pigeon).
- the top of the feathers ends in ,,V,,with cherry coloured.
- the frames are bigger in the tail and smaller in the wing.
with a female pigeon the frame can be darker towards grey
The Form:
When the wings are down they are sticked to the body, the tops being under the tail.
The Stature:
Small, compact, short-legged . It is a medium to small size pigeon , the form of the body being rectangular.
Head Shape:
Square with rounded edges , small, white short beak.
These are the first features that make the differences between a beautiful standard cherry coloured pigeon and many others. The ten features that make the standard are described more detailed in the standard breed. I have written only about what strikes you at a first sight. A tailor cuts the cloth first and then he starts shaping the future suit step by step. In other words….
The Drawing:
The lack of the white fluff and feathers (except for the tail) on their body. If they have white fluffs ,these cherrycoloured pigeons are called ,,grivi,, . and if they don,t have a white collar they are ,,simplii,,(simple). The most beautiful ones are the collar ones. The lack of the collar is not a deficiency. Some breeders like the collar ones more, others like the simple ones. I, for example, like the collar ones. The simple ones should be very good looking to keep them.
The Shape:
The wings extanding the tail or kept above it is a deficiency.this pigeon has not the wings down.
The Stature:
To realize if the pigeon is short-legged you should see as many as possible cherry coloured ones simultaneously, then you notice how it is even if you look at only one pigeon. This is valid for the colour too. There are: cherry coloured ones,,that have no colour,, their colour is lighter in comparison with the colour of the rotten cherry ones. You learn how ,,to see,, this also by comparison at the beginning.
Head Shape:
Beside the square with rounded edges head, more delicate with the females you check if they have or not:
- the double white butterlike colour lashes (so called dead leashes)
- the beak white and short
- the eyes orange with black iris.
The white double lashes can ,,disappear, more precisely they can become thin white pink because of the friction in the air in case the pigeons fly regularly. The eye can have an interrupted orange colour in which case the eye is ,,broken,, . This is a deficiency as well as in case that the whole eye is black or the eyes are of different colour.
We have covered the second stage. We have given the suit a shape as a tailor should have done. But we still have a lot more to do. If we are tailors we have to point out its worth by smaller or bigger details. If we are customers we have to know what to look at. From here it is more complicated. We have to know the standard very well. By heart. And to start looking at:

-the tail: how wide it is? Generally it has 14-16 feathers. But if it is tightly carried this is a deficiency even if it has more than 16 feathers. If it also has sticks(cherry coloured feathers in case of the cherry pigeons) is even worse. - by the croup the white cherry coloured pigeon has a swelling especially females ‘’like a nut’’ .Its absence is a deficiency but not an eliminatory one. Not to be mistaken for the presence of the cherry coloured fluffs on the croup, case in which this is a cherrycoloured pigeon with rump which is also a deficiency. If the fluffs on the legs are white that means that it has drowers. This is also a deficiency .
We also notice: a curved chest a shallow back with concave lines.
This is how a cherrycoloured pigeon should look like. To have a lot of fluffs on it a short and a little convex neck a daring stature.
It is difficult almost impossible , to learn, about a cherry coloured pigeon from words. Still, I have tried to make the work of the one who wants to learn cherry coloured pigeons much easier. In a long run as there are much more things to be said, I invite you to get to know this beautiful pigeons in photos or in breeds.
